Pavel J. Ryba & Mind
the Step - Jazz at Prague castle 2005 ~ Paula Edelstein, All Music Guide MIND THE STEP was recorded “live” at Prague Castle on September 25, 2005 during Jazzfestival Jazz Na Hrade in Romanske sklepeni. On it, the internationally renowned Czechoslovakian bassist, Pavel J. Ryba displays the technical finesse and melodic beauty of his electric bass on 8 great songs. Accompanied by Petr A. Venkrbec on alto sax, Jiri Kollman on percussion and guest trumpeter from the United Kingdom, Bryan Corbett, the quartet grooves with relaxed confidence on such songs as “What’s Her Poison,” “Tough Talk,” “Smaller Wounds,” and “Topless,” which are all original compositions written by Pavel J. Ryba. With Ryba’s Jaco Pastorious-like riffs under Corbett’s blazing trumpeting and Venkrbec’s great saxophonics, “What’s Her Poison” is a powerful song that blends free jazz and bop elements with Ryba’s natural loping bass guitar rhythms. The fire in Ryba’s solo shows that he has grown into a very deep player. On “Tough Talk,” the horn charts are thoughtful, breathy statements filled with free harmonic and melodic invention. The horns are an excellent foil to Ryba’s bass lines – always taking the song to the next place with avant-garde improvisations that are very original. Ryba has great tone and his bass lines always seem make sense. Give a listen to the group’s interplay as Ryba seems to disappear into the group while still making the sounds happen. “Smaller Wounds,” is a beauty. Here listeners are able to experience Ryba’s personal style and sense of rhythm as a leader as he develops his ideas through a different window as a soloist before being joined by Venkrbec’s haunting alto sax. All of the songs on this CD are excellent but it is their rendition of Monk’s “Straight, No Chaser” that affirms music as an international language. I think the word “entertaining” might be a good one to describe the feelings exuded on these excellent songs. With the band’s fire and inventive riffs, these songs became very special before a live audience that evening. That certainly brings another element to consider when listening to MIND THE STEP. Back SOUND OF TIMELESS JAZZ/USA / rev: Paula Edelstein - 2005 Morally Topless/Mind The Step & Pavel J. Ryba Czechoslovakian bassist/composer/arranger/producer Pavel J. Ryba maintains his genuine fondness for fusing elements of avant-garde/free jazz genre with exciting rock bass riffs and atonal Czechoslovakian folk passages on this exceptional display of musical tastes. Stellar accompaniment from alto saxophonist Petr Albert Venkrbec, Jiri Koliman on percussion, Mikolas Nop on drums, Mike Stern on guitar and Camillo Caller on percussion make up MORALLY TOPLESS/MIND THE STEP which features 9 songs written by Ryba and co-arranged with Venkrbec. The bassist, who has a sound similar to the late Jaco Pastorious’ released SMALLER WOUNDS in the late 90s, and has continued to gain international popularity as a leader and sideman with such noted jazz musicians as Joe **. “Tomorrow Will Be Better,” is a sterling example of Ryba’s bass virtuosity. He makes a powerful original artistic statement by playing the entire length of the neck of the bass guitar, slapping, plucking and is only accompanied by Kollman’s handclaps, rhythmic rim shots and a ride cymbal for excellent artistic effect. On Monk’s “Straight No Chaser,” he reinterprets this jazz standard in a trio setting with Venkrbec’s alto sax out front and his bass guitar in tandem with Nop’s drums keeping the rhythm logic in the pocket. “Song For Jaco,” is an emotional homage to one of jazz fusion’s most popular bassists and its eerie, haunting riffs at the intro provide a musical image of what Jaco would be playing today. Ryba is awesome on this track – is definitely in the rock/jazz fusion groove and playing with confidence and competence. This is by far one of the best songs of the CD. Check out MORALLY TOPLESS/MIND THE STEP if you enjoy rock/jazz fusion with a dash of avant-garde/free jazz elements. Back |

SLOVAKIA Doma i v zahraničí rešpektovaný basgitarista Pavel
Mind The Step (Jiří Kollman – perkusie, Petr Albert Venkrbec – saxofón)

SLOVAKIA / MUSIC-REVUE: So, it´s called the beauty. Almoust one-hour lasting concert for fretless bassguitar and sensitively reacting group of musicians were prepared by enthusiastic propagator and virtuos of this specific instrument – P.J.Ryba. This young czech instrumentalist and componist makes surprises by his suverenous player´s technique and melodic invency thanks to which his instrument oversteps only accompanied and rhytmic featere common in tandem with percusians and drums. Bassguitar becomes beautiful solo instrument with magic sound in his hand. To this task there is adoption of arrangement of compositions at album „Ano,ano,ne,ne“ (Yes,yes,no,no) and sound-mixing at which the level of other compositions was supressed softly and by purpose to create marvelous glisand, smooth sounds of fretless bass guitar. At album there are no agressive tones which can interrupt the stress of miracle of intim jazz world to which P.J.Ryba together with M.T.S. art ensemble take the listener immediately when first sounds of album start and they don´t let you stop till the end of sentimental „A child is born“ from Thed Jones with its perfect combinations of bassguitar ant bass clarinet in accompany of piano. „Ano,ano....“ is in no case just „one-dimension“ album. Except mediation dimension we can find joyful songs here (e.g. – Ryba´s „Together“ with folklor motives, swinging „Sugar“ from Stanley Turrentin, „After Lunch-meat“ from David Krupa. Of in the same fresh introductory – standart from Sonny Rollins „St. Thomas“ in which Ryba introduces himself as bravour technist with perfect rhytmic feeling and phrasing. To seek for the Top-places of music, in the case of this marvellous album, is not in justice to other powerful moments but bassguitar solo in variations „Variations II-My One and only love (from Wood,Mellin,Ryba) or Ryba´s composition „ JE-BAL“ are great experience really ! |

radov jazzmanov.
Na platni Yes, Yes, No, No môžeme počuť kvarteto mladšej strednej
generácie českých hráčov v obsadení P. J. R. bezpražcová basgitara, Petr
